Asghar Seyed Gohrab

Professor of Iranian and Persian Studies

Welcome to Asghar Seyed-Gohrab's website.

I was born in Tehran and have lived in the Netherlands since 1986. I studied English language and literature (M.A.) at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, and Persian language and culture (M.A.) at Leiden University. This is also where I completed my PhD on Persian literature and Islamic mysticism.

On this site you will find information on my projects and publications. I have worked at Leiden University from 1997 to 2021. In September 2021, I moved to Utrecht University, to the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies where I work as Professor of Iranian and Persian Studies. At the moment, I run the ERC Advanced Grant project entitled Beyond Sharia: The Role of Sufism in Shaping Islam as the Principal Investigator.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for any questions related to the Persian and Iranian Studies.
